Toddler Groups

Choosing a good toddler group.

Different toddler groups are suited to different parents and toddlers.

Some people will prefer a very informal setting where they are able to get to chat and socialise with other moms or dads. Others will prefer the ‘discipline’ of ‘structure’ and will be using the time in toddler group to help prepare their child for the future, such as school – where they would have to sit and concentrate.

Charges:

Toddler groups can vary greatly in cost. Some groups can be completely free of charge – set up by the local council or maybe even a local church that just wants to love their community by providing them with a free service that benefits peoples general, everyday, lives. Other ‘companies’ set up toddler groups on a purely profit basis.

For the ‘company’ to be able to charge a premium, they will generally provide a quality service. This could be via having a superior location (maybe a soft-play centre), having good quality material such as musical instruments, lights, etc. or simply by using highly trained staff who have much experience of dealing with young children and helping them to develop.

Frequency:

Toddler groups will, in general, be a weekly event. There are certainly exceptions to this, with some groups meeting on a daily basis – where you can ‘pick and choose’ when to turn up and some could well be on a monthly basis.

Dads?

It is often assumed that toddler groups are for mums and toddlers (some even have ‘mother &’ in the title!) A vast majority of groups will welcome dads as well as/instead of mums. There are also groups out there who specialise in ‘dads mornings’ – some have even been known to supply a welcome bacon sandwich!
